For the first time, DHIS has been used in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1998-1999. It has quickly become popular, and is presently used in over 60 countries worldwide. Development of DHIS is coordinated by the Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo, and is supported by many international development organisations. The second version of the DHIS uses the Java platform. Its releases are commonly referred to as DHIS2.

In the Republic of Tajikistan, development and implementation of DHIS2 system has become possible with the financial support and technical assistance of the European Union and United Nations Development Programme.
