Basic Medical Statistics and Demographical Analysis

This manual is intended for use of students of medical universities, and for practical seminars on public health.

Statistics and statistical methodology are widely used by health professionals in their practical and scientific work.

The word “statistics” originates from the Latin word “Status”, which means state or position. Statistics is a social science, which studies the quantitative aspects of mass social phenomena in close relation with their qualitative aspects. One of the branches of statistics is the Public Health Statistics, which studies the quantitative aspect of mass phenomena and processes in medicine. Public Health Statistics is a chapter of public health, and includes the Medical Statistics and Health Statistics. Medical Statistics studies the health of population in general and health of certain social groups, and establishes the connections between health and various social factors. Health Statistics analyses the data related to the network of medical and sanitary institutions, their activities and human resources, and evaluates the efficiency of various activities, aimed to prevention and treatment of diseases.
